Maria Paula Romo explained that “they are not more harmful, but less effective.”
Government Minister Maria Paula Romo confirmed that National Police used expired tear gas to disperse protesters during the demonstrations against economic measures.
“We were in the middle of an emergency and we had to use what we had on hand,” Romo said.
During the protests, videos and photographs of tear gas bombs that citizens found on the streets were published on social media. In some cases, these had expired in 2013 or 2014.
“We also used expired bombs,” she said. The Minister explained that expired bombs are not more harmful, but less effective.
