Both authorities were sentenced to one year and four months in jail.
The National Court of Justice Judge, David Jacho declared Congressman Yofre Poma and Sucumbios Prefect Amado Chavez guilty. Both politicians were sentenced for the crime of paralyzing a public service (SOTE), during the October protests.
Poma and Chavez will have to remain 16 months in prison; they will pay a penalty fee of four basic salaries (USD 1,576); they will take responsibility for integral reparation (USD 6,000) and must offer a public apology.
According to the Prosecutor’s Office, on October 7, 2019, the accused people violently entered the Petroecuador facilities, in Sucumbios. Three workers were forced to stop the oil pumping through the Trans-Ecuadorian Pipeline System (SOTE). This fact would have caused economic damages to the State for more than USD 1,700,000.
Meanwhile, a group of people outside the Court demanded the release of Poma, Chavez and six other people.
