Epidemiological fence due to delta variant increases from 26 to 50 suspects in Ecuador

Isabel Cueva, Zonal 7 Health coordinator, reported that the epidemiological fence has been increased due to cases of the delta variant of COVID-19 in El Oro. As of July 14, 50 people had been detected.

In an interview with KCHFM Radio, Cueva reported that, weeks ago, they noticed the increase in infections in Machala and, later, they determined that there were 10 positive cases with the new variant. “We moved from Loja to make tours and try to locate patients to see what happened,” said Cueva, stating that two cases traveled to Guayaquil because they needed hospital care.

Until yesterday, Wednesday July 14, there have been no new reports of deaths with this variant. Cueva mentioned that, of the five deaths registered, the two that occurred in Guayaquil had other illnesses that aggravated their condition.

She reported that Minister Ximena Garzón traveled to Machala to learn first-hand about the epidemiological situation, after the detection of the new variant. In this city and throughout the province of El Oro there is a state of exception and a curfew until next July 28.

So far, she clarified, no new cases of the variant have been reported, but the Ministry has already sent new samples to INSPI for sequencing.

One of the actions of the Government was to accelerate the vaccination process in this province. Cueva commented that, if the vaccination rhythm continues, she expects that, by September, 73% of the population will be fully vaccinated.

José Ruales, Vice Minister of Health, reported that, so far, 37% of the population of El Oro has received the first dose of the vaccine. Yesterday, he said, 10,000 citizens were vaccinated in Machala.
