Ecuador continues with problems in the ability to diagnose Covid-19

Ecuador has not increased its ability to diagnose Covid-19, according to the Social Observatory of Ecuador. The country is among the 30 countries with the lowest cumulative rate of tests per 1,000 inhabitants in the world; it is penultimate in the American continent and last in South America.

The Social Observatory of Ecuador reports that positivity in our country (percentage of positive tests out of all tests analyzed) continues to be high.

June 30 was the fifth highest in the world (28.1%), second in the American continent and South America, only surpassed by Colombia (31.4%).

Based on daily monitoring, it is established that the average positivity in the last two weeks (June 26 to July 9) was 26.8% in Ecuador.

The country exceeded by more than five times the 5% that the World Health Organization-WHO has recommended reaching, as an indicator of adequate case tracking and containment of contagion.

As of July 9, the daily average of PCR tests taken in Ecuador was 3,325 and that of tests analyzed 3,228. At the moment, 1,579,458 people have completed one; that is, not 10% of the population.

According to the infographic from last Sunday, the positivity in the provinces is diverse. Six provinces have positivity higher than 30%, in the last four weeks. In Pastaza and Carchi it is 42%. At the other extreme, Galapagos with 4% and Santa Elena 8%.

The Minister of Public Health, Ximena Garzón, assured this Monday that epidemiological surveillance will be intensified. The testing capacity (taking samples and results) should increase significantly to meet this objective.
