The law will enter into force in January 2020.

The prefect of Azuay, Yaku Perez announced that the Provincial Chamber unanimously approved the ban on single-use plastics gradually. “We must eliminate this bad habit of using plastics. Instead, we should use bags, fabric covers or baskets to go to the market,” said Perez.

The objective is to organize and regulate the production, marketing, distribution, and use of single-use plastic items to gradually reduce and eradicate the consumption of plastic and polyethylene products.

“To that is added the irresponsible attitude of many people who, without thinking about the ecological damage they cause, throw waste everywhere. These arrive at the Paute River, now a floating tank or dump,” the Prefect explained.

The Environmental Management Director, Marcelo Quizhpe recalled that the law -which bans single-use plastic- will enter into force in January 2020.

The Galapagos Islands and Guayaquil already apply this regulation. Other cities are also analyzing this proposal.
