In Ecuador, Human Rights Organizations warn about the danger of Intag’s biodiversity

The Alliance of Organizations for Human Rights warned about the danger that the Intag valley faces from mining exploitation, once Judge Óscar Alfredo Coba Vayas, of the Multicompetent Judicial Unit of Cotacachi, denied the request for precautionary measures.

According to the Alliance, on June 23, Judge Coba denied the request without calling a hearing to discuss the precautionary measures requested by biologist Andrea Terán, in favor of the nature of the valley.

The objective of the lawsuit was to prevent the mining exploration processes from being restarted in the LLurimagua sector, due to the serious risk that this type of intervention implies in the biodiversity of the area and especially the imminent danger of extinction faced by the harlequin frogs. snout and confused nurse frog.

For Human Rights organizations, the resolution in the first instance implied a triumph for the rights of Nature, but with the nullity and refusal to grant precautionary measures in the face of the imminent extinction of species, the continuous violation and the risk of extinction of hundreds of species it is imminent in one of the most biodiverse and threatened places on the planet.

Intag is located about 60 kilometers from the Cotacachi canton, in the province of Imbabura, it is a mountainous region in which small communities settle.

The valley is a tourist place where there are agricultural lands and cloud forests with a great diversity of flora and fauna that are part of the most important biological zones in the world. It is precisely part of the Cotacachi-Cayapas Ecological Reserve.
