Mega-hydroelectric power plant starts up operations in China

(Prensa Latina) China’s Baihetan hydroelectric power plant, a large scale work built on the upper section of Yangstse River, which can generate up to 16 million kilowatts, started up operations on Monday.

The plant is working with two of its 16 hydro-generators and, according to plan, all of them will be in full operation in July 2022. Each unit can generate one million kilowatts. The plant is located between south western Yunnan and Sichuan provinces, and it is expected to save 19.68 million tons of charcoal; thereby reducing emissions of millions of tons of polluting gases every year.

When welcoming the start-up, Chinese President Xi Jinping called it an important project for the west-east electricity transmission program in the country, and highlighted the work of all those involved in its construction.

Likewise, he called to make bigger efforts so that China can make progress in reaching its carbon dioxide emission peak by 2030 and neutralized chemical wastes in 2060.
