(Prensa Latina) The draft of the new Forestry Law approved in the Chamber of Deputies of Uruguay evidenced once againt the differences existing between the main parties of the ruling coalition, Nacional (PN), Colorado (PC) and Cabildo Abierto (CA).
Guillermo Domenech, CA legislator, expressed disappointment at the lack of interest of the other two associated parties to consider in Senate a proposal that places a limit on the lands dedicated to forestry and protects the exploitation of other agricultural items.
The majority of the deputies approved it in December 2020, with the votes of the promoter formation, the Frente Amplio and the Radical Intransigent Ecologist Party, and with the prospect of being endorsed by the Upper House.
Faced with this predicted outcome the country’s President Luis Lacalle Pou publicly threatened to exercise the executive veto.
During the week, the Minister of Livestock and Agriculture, Carlos Maria Uriarte, of the PC, postponed the treatment of the initiative, claiming that cartographic studies were being carried out.
As stated by the lobbyist senator, ‘nationals’ and ‘colorados’ in reality ‘have no interest in accompanying’ the project and they know it ‘perfectly well’ in CA.
This component of the electoral coalition also marked differences in other pro-government legislative proposals, among them those related to the media and fuels, which facilitate the insertion of foreign capital in public companies.
