(Prensa Latina) The Puebla Group expressed its concern about the coup attempts in Peru and offered its full support to the newly elected constitutional president in that country, Pedro Castillo.
The progressive alliance issued a statement highlighting its support for Castillo in his defense of democratic institutionality and made a patriotic call to the Armed Forces to maintain their condition of civility and neutrality in the face of the results of an electoral process already closed by constitutional authorities.
After the victory of Castillo became known, the Group, of which two presidents, several former presidents and personalities from 17 countries are part, had recently asked the representatives of all the institutions of Peru to respect the popular vote unrestrictedly.
It also pointed out that in the climate of polarization in which the electoral process took place, it is imperative that all political and institutional actors accept the result of the elections and that any type of plans or calls for future democratic destabilizations be rejected.
