Archbishop of Cali condemns police violence in Colombia

(Prensa Latina) Archbishop of Cali Dario Monsalve on Thursday condemned the police violence against the people in Colombia, who have taken to the streets for a month against the economic and social policies implemented by President Ivan Duque’s government.

‘Catholic priests and Christian shepherds, who accompany the people in points of resistance, are witness to the brutal script of armed attacks perpetrated by police patrols, leaving wounded in their wake,’ he denounced on Twitter.

In the same tweet, the priest wondered, ‘Who are perverting the police into executioners of the people?’

Monsalve pointed out that cases such as the one that took place on Wednesday in Jamundi, in Valle del Cauca department, where agents of the Mobile Anti-Riot Squad injured people with excessive force, are reported throughout Cali and neighboring cities.

‘By God, do not obey orders to wound, murder, torture. Conscientious objection. Denounce those who give (the orders). Do not provoke more hatred. Take care of everyone’s life and the people and God will take care of yours,’ the archbishop urged.
