Progress made in negotiations on protests in Colombia

(Prensa Latina) The Colombian Government and the National Strike Committee on Tuesday reached a preliminary agreement on guarantees for the exercise of the protest, according to representatives of the group.

The representatives explained in a statement that after nine days of talks, they reached a preliminary agreement that provides a general framework to guarantee the mobilizations, which will allow for the start of talks on the emergency document presented by the Committee.

The organization stated that they hope to facilitate and support negotiations with other mobilized sectors among youths and citizens.

‘We hope that the Government will soon endorse the pre-agreement and that we can formalize it with the presence of the president of the Republic, Ivan Duque, to start the negotiations,’ they said.

Francisco Maltes Tello, president of Central Unitaria de Trabajadores (Workers’ Unitary Union) and one of the Committee’s spokespersons, called for the protests in the country to be ramped up on Wednesday and Friday, a month since the start of the strike.

Maltes Tello assured that the mobilization is permanent in more than 700 municipalities in the country.

‘We are going to hold cultural and recreational events, bang pots at night, and on Tuesday we will continue to support in Congress the debate on the motion of censure against Minister of Defense Diego Molano for his responsibility in the police violence against the people,’ Tello explained.
