Brazilian army opens inquiry on general allied to Bolsonaro

(Prensa Latina) The Brazilian Army opened a disciplinary process against General Eduardo Pazuello, who on Sunday participated in a political ceremony with President Jair Bolsonaro in Rio de Janeiro, local media reported on Tuesday.

CNN Brasil claimed that the investigation will assess whether the former minister of Health breached the Army’s Disciplinary Rules, which establishes penalties if the military personnel on duty publicly speaks, without authorization, about matters of a partisan political nature.

At the event, Bolsonaro critized the social lockdown due to Covid-19 again, and Pazuello made a short statement before an audience that was chanting in favor of a military coup.

The decision to open an investigation into Pazuello was made on Monday by the Army’s Commander, General Paulo Sergio Nogueira.

CNN reported that the initial idea was for Pazuello to be personally briefed by Nogueira, but the general did not arrive on time from Rio.

At first, a personal meeting between the two was planned for Tuesday morning, but it was cancelled.

Soldiers considered his participation in the ceremony next to Bolsonaro an affront.

At the moment, it is unknown what type of punishment the former minister may receive, and he could be subject to a relatively severe penalty or just a formal warning.
