(Prensa Latina) Former Bolivian President Evo Morales on Monday congratulated the Chilean people for the results of the megaelections held over the weekend in the neighboring country.
Chile on Sunday concluded the electoral process for the positions of governors, mayors and other local authorities, and the members of the convention that will elaborate a new Constitution.
‘We congratulate the Chilean people for their electoral victory for the Constituent Assembly, in the face of Pinochet’s followers and neoliberalism,’ Morales tweeted.
The former Bolivian president noted that Chileans want a Constitution made by the people, and described the election as a great step towards the construction of a Plurinational State, proposed by the Mapuche indigenous people and the popular movement.
Still without the definite results from Chile’s electoral authorities, forecasts indicate that the majority of voters favored the candidates of the left wing and independents.
Near the end of the day, Chilean President Sebastian Piñera acknowledged the voting trend and admitted that it is the result of the majority’s animosity towards the governmental administration.
‘(…) we are not in tune with the citizens and we are being questioned,’ the president said at La Moneda Palace (seat of the Executive), where he also pointed out that ‘citizens have sent us a clear and strong message to the government and to all the traditional political forces.’
Regarding the Constituent Convention, the defeat of the ruling party paves the way to a truly inclusive Constitution, as demanded by the millions of Chileans who took to the streets in 2020 and who were repressed with extreme violence by the police and the military.
Chile is ruled by the Constitution approved in 1980 under the dictatorship of Augusto Pinochet (1973-1990).
