(Prensa Latina) Chilean President Sebastián Piñera said that ‘we are not in tune with the public and we are being questioned,’ referring to mega-election results this weekend.
In an address from La Moneda Palace the eve, the president thus admitted the overwhelming defeat of the ruling party and the traditional parties in the election of constituents, governors, mayors and councilors.
Piñera assured these were historic elections, especially for the election of 155 constituents who will be in charge of drafting the new Constitution, made up of a joint body and an indigenous presence, and for being the first time population elects regional governors.
He pointed out that ‘the citizenship has sent us a clear and strong message to the Government and also to all traditional political forces. We are not adequately tuning in with the demands and desires of the citizens’ who opted for new leaderships, he said.
Partial results resulted, according to analysts and the press, a resounding defeat for the ruling coalition Chile Vamos, which lost important mayors and regional governments.
