Brazil variant of COVID-19 is already community in Ecuador

The Minister of Health, Camilo Salinas, announced on May 4, 2021 that the P1 variant of COVID-19, from Brazil, is already a community in the country.

The minister had already alerted him. “The Brazilian variant will be difficult to contain due to the transmission times and the presence of the virus in different patients that we have detected so far,” he said on April 20, when three patients infected with the variant were counted.

Studies have revealed that P1 is more contagious than the other variants. In addition, they indicate that the risk of infection increases because it evades the immunity acquired in previous infections.

The first case in Ecuador was detected on April 12, in Loja. Then there was another confirmed in that province and one more in Manabí. By the end of April, Salinas confirmed that the variant was detected in patients from Pichincha, Manabí, Loja, Tungurahua and, in Guayaquil, the first case was reported this Monday, May 3.

“We can say that it has advanced and, according to the transmission times, we can say that it is already a community,” said Salinas this Tuesday, May 4.

Other variants circulate in Ecuador, apart from the original strain: the British and the New York. Both with a community contagion for a long time. However, there is still concern on the part of the health authorities about the South African variant, which has not yet been confirmed in the country.
