This Wednesday, April 21, 2021, is the second consecutive day that Ecuador registers more than 2,000 hospitalized by COVID-19 and the waiting list to occupy a bed in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), nationwide, exceeds 300 people .
In the epidemiological report of the Ministry of Health it is evident that the hospital occupation exceeded its capacity. Since April 9, the number of internees has not reduced or remained stable.
On April 1 there were 1,656 hospitalized, between stable and serious. This indicator varies due to hospital discharges and new admissions, but since that day more and more patients have arrived aggravated by the symptoms of COVID-19.
There was an average of 1,700 in the first days of the month, but in the last two days it reached 1,900 daily and, for the second day, this Wednesday nationwide there are 2,054 hospitalized: 1,404 stable and 650 with a reserved prognosis.
Therefore, every day, the waiting list to access a bed also grows, especially in the Intensive Care Units (ICU). In public hospitals there is no longer space and there are almost 400 people waiting, with a serious clinical picture.
Infections have also increased in recent weeks. Today there are 1,689 new infections and the country adds a total of 362,843 confirmed cases of COVID-19.
In Pichincha, the positivity rate closed March with 27% and for Sunday, April 18, a 38% positivity of infections was registered.
The death rate has also increased. This Wednesday there are 60 more deaths and amounts to 17,804 deaths due to the pandemic. Statisticians report that, in October 2020, there were an average of 40 deaths per day, while in April there are 191 deaths every day.
Medical unions have requested, since last week, containment actions to the National Government. However, neither the Ministry of Health nor the authorities of the National Emergency Operations Committee (COE) have resolved measures in the face of the collapsed health system.
