Ombudsman’s Office demands to decriminalize abortion for rape

The Ombudsman’s Office (DPE) demanded, from the Constitutional Court (CC), to decriminalize abortion for rape, included in articles 149 and 150 of the Comprehensive Penal Code (COIP).

The institution called on the judges of the constitutional body to consider this decision, after the news that the CC will deal with this case.

“As the Ombudsman’s Office we point out that the Constitutional Court has a historic opportunity to rule in favor of the rights of women and girls in the country,” he said.
In its tweets, the DPE emphasized that rape abortion must be a reality.

“TODAY WE DEMAND THE DEPENALIZATION OF ABORTION”, ENDS HIS MESSAGE.

The Constitutional Court included, in the order of business for this Wednesday, April 28, to address the unconstitutionality claim of these articles, presented in 2019, by social groups.

Articles 149 and 150 of the COIP establish abortion as a crime and define certain reasons why this action is not punishable; that is, so that they are not punished.

On August 15, 2019, the Challenge Foundation; the National Coalition of Women of Ecuador; the Ecuadorian Front for the Defenses of Sexual and Reproductive Rights; and the group Mujeres con Voz filed a lawsuit for the unconstitutionality of these grounds
