Singer Jesús Fichamba died at the age of 74 due to complications from COVID-19. This was confirmed by his friend and also artist Gustavo Pacheco.
On April 14, it was learned that Fichamba was admitted to a health home due to the effects of the disease. He even went into an induced coma.
The artist who was originally from Peguche, Otavalo, always felt proud of his roots, which is why he represented Ecuador, in September 1985, at the OTI Festival of Song, in Spain.
In this contest he obtained second place with his traditional interpretation of La Pinta, la Niña and la Santa María, written by Luis Padilla and composed by Gustavo Pacheco, who also directed the orchestra composed of 47 musicians who played live in that iconic presentation.
This musical theme represented for Fichamba an important part of his life and the trigger for good memories.
After OTI Internacional, the singer received several invitations to television programs and later, he recorded his second album called Soñando.
Between 1990 and 2000, Fichamba gave priority to the international promotion of him and participated as a guest in fairs and small artistic festivals.
In Guayaquil, where he settled, he worked in his shoe sales business in the Bay and also served as coordinator of the ORI program (Operation Child Rescue).
María José Fichamba, one of his daughters, commented – days ago – that her father and his mother were going to get married again.
Although the marriage between Fichamba and Shirley Salazar (mother of three of his four children) ended 10 years ago, the good relationship they maintained led them to think about getting married again.
María José was the one who took care of the health of her father, who remained in an induced coma due to the severity of the disease and with a reserved prognosis.
Faced with this unfortunate news, notes of regret were expressed on social networks, among them the president-elect Guillermo Lasso, as well as the prefect of Pichincha, Paola Pabón.
