On April 7, 2020, a spill of more than 15 thousand barrels of crude affected several communities in the Amazon. Almost a year after the event, its inhabitants claim that there is no justice or reparation.
For the damage to the environment and the impact on the health of the inhabitants, they presented a protection action in September 2020, but it was denied by a judge of first instance and, in their appeal, the Provincial Court of Orellana confirmed that there was no violation of rights.
The plaintiffs and their defense attorneys also denied that it has been a year of criminalization and persecution against them.
The cause of the spill was the rupture of the Trans-Ecuadorian Pipeline System, SOTE, the Heavy Crude Oil Pipeline, OCP, and the Shushufindi – Quito pipeline, due to erosion in the Coca River.
One year after this event, in the midst of a pandemic, communities demand attention and justice from the State. Amazonian women are present in the great march together with Kichwa community members from Orellana.
