Guayas Medical College requests a new quarantine

The authorities of the Municipality of Guayaquil recognize that 36% of the infections in 2021 were declared during March.

The Guayas Medical Association asked the local authorities for a new 15-day quarantine, suspend the Easter holiday and accelerate the vaccination process, these measures aim to mitigate the growth of positive cases of Covid-19 in the province.

In Guayaquil, 8.550 positive cases of coronavirus have been registered so far in 2021. The authorities of the Municipality recognize that 36% of these infections were declared during this March.

The cantonal COE authorities warned that in the last week an average of 17 deaths per day was registered, additionally, more than 40 patients in critical condition arrived at the ICUs of the hospitals.

The Guild of Doctors of Guayas believes that these high rates of infections are due to the carnival holiday, the general elections and the high school graduation parties in February.

One of the requests of the doctors is to speed up the vaccination process and reach an immunity of 70%. For this, 100.000 people should be vaccinated per day, according to experts.

For their part, the Municipality of Guayaquil and the Ministry of Health reached an agreement this Thursday, March 25, 2021, to vaccinate 1.8 million Guayaquil residents. The Government will provide the doses and the Cabildo will coordinate the logistics, the times have yet to be defined.
