Bolivia and Mexico align positions on the OAS

A joint declaration of the presidents of Mexico, Andrés M. López Obrador, and of Bolivia, Luis Arce Catacora expresses, in relation to the Organization of American States (OAS), that “they will not tolerate interference in internal affairs.”

This position is given in the official visit of President Arce
in Mexico, where both presidents criticized the role of the OAS and especially its secretary general, Luis Almagro, for contributing to the political and social crisis, which led to the coup against the then Bolivian president, Evo Morales.

The Bolivian president took asylum in Mexico from November 2019 to January 2020, after the installation of the de facto government in Bolivia. President Arce highlighted and thanked the oaís for having helped him.

The two presidents demand that Almagro “refrain from intervening in the internal affairs of the member states” and insist on the importance of “promoting the exclusively technical, objective and impartial nature of the Electoral Observation Missions” of the OAS.

Likewise, they ask that these commissions limit themselves to “acting within their own institutional framework” and “not intervening in the internal affairs of the member states.”
