Funeral homes with more work due to an increase in the death rate in Ecuador

Given the increase in deaths this month due to the coronavirus, mainly in the provinces of Guayas and Pichincha, funeral homes are cremating bodies 24 hours a day.

These mortuary businesses work as at the beginning of the pandemic and have even had to hire an additional 20% of workers to carry out cremations.

For Sebastián Barona, national coordinator of the Funeral Federation of Ecuador, the situation is worrying. He speaks on behalf of the president of this organization, who died from Covid-19.

According to Barona, the month of December was complex, January critical, but March worries him. He does not know the number of deaths with which it will close this month, as projections indicate that there will be 50% more deaths.

According to the Civil Registry between March 2020 and the same month of this year, the death rate grew by 25%, but mathematicians like Juan José Illinworth the figure could be even higher.
