Édison Jibaja, Head of Management of the Intensive Care Unit of the Eugenio Espejo Hospital, warned that, at the moment, the hospitals in Quito do not have availability of analgesics or beds to treat the coronavirus, due to this there was an increase in mortality due to this illness in recent weeks.
“The authorities fight to face the daily demand of patients, they even adapted other spaces and areas.”
At the IESS Quito Sur Hospital, Marco Bonifaz, Deputy Director of Medical Audit, explained that the occupation of hospital beds is at the maximum and that they cannot attend to more patients.
“At present we are at 100%, with a full house, that is, with 253 patients in Covid hospitalization.”
For her part, Linda Guamán, Technical Coordinator of the Quito Health Secretariat, also stressed that the Intensive Care Units are saturated, despite the fact that several hospitals adapted even cafeterias to attend the health crisis.
“In recent days we are receiving a high number of young adults and the elderly, but as long as we do not have a mass vaccination, it is difficult to contain the pandemic. The only strategy we have left is the use of tests ”.
According to the report sent by the Ministry of Public Health (MSP) with a cut-off to March 7, Pichincha registered 569 new infections by Covid-19, in 24 hours, making a total of 102.322 registered cases.
