The government plans to vaccinate 220.983 school and college teachers and 35.673 university teachers.
Days ago, the Ministry of Health reported that immunization will begin in the Sierra and in institutions that apply their progressive return pilot, especially those in rural areas. This is part of phase one of the vaccination plan, which also includes the military and the police.
María Gloria Alarcón, representative of the private sector in the alliance with the Ministry of Health, clarified that the groups will be attended simultaneously.
Of the more than 220.000 teachers, 75% work in public schools and 23%, in private individuals.
Vinicio Aldaz, representative of the Corporación de Colegios Particulares, said that vaccination is important for this group, in order to advance in the pilot plans that are already approved by the national Emergency Operations Committee (COE).
The Ministry of Education awaits the instructions of the Ministry of Health for the announced procedure to be applied, as some private educational centers would make their medical personnel available.
In the case of the 34 municipal centers of Quito, although they have already presented their Institutional Plans for Educational Continuity (PICE), Patricio Avilés, metropolitan director of Educational Management, stated that they will not return to classes this school year, since they still do not have the conditions necessary to guarantee the safety of the entire community.
Meanwhile, a total of 1.961 teachers in the country are over 65 years old. The Ministry of Education announced that those who live with a disease or belong to risk groups will be able to take advantage of telework.
What is clear at the moment is that students will not be vaccinated. So far it has been said that the doses will apply only to those over 18 years of age.
For the epidemiologist Andrea Gómez, it is not only necessary to think about the teachers, but about all those who work in the institutions.
She stated that the risk groups established by the World Health Organization, such as the elderly and people with comorbidities, should be cared for.
