More than 200 inmates escape prison in Haiti

The escape of these prisoners left 25 people dead, including civilians, inmates and the director of the penitentiary.

The Haitian Police are searching for more than 200 prisoners who escaped last Thursday, February 25, 2021, from the Croix-des-Bouquets prison, near Port-au-Prince. In this escape 25 people died, including the director of the prison.

People who live near the prison confirmed that gunshots and screams were heard in the days before the great escape. Subsequently, several inmates ran from the prison and escaped.

For their part, among the 25 deceased are many people who were walking through the sector at the time of the riot and also the director of the prison, Paul Hector Joseph, the authorities detailed.

Among the fugitives was Arnel Joseph, a powerful gang leader, who also died hours after escaping. Joseph was riding a motorcycle when the police asked him to stop, he ignored it and drew a gun, however, the uniformed men were faster and shot him.

Authorities confirmed that 60 people have already been detained. Initial reports speak that more than 400 inmates escaped from the Croix-des-Bouquets prison, which opened in 2012.
