Rescue teams focus their efforts on finding the workers of two hydroelectric plants that were being built in the area.
An avalanche of great proportions was registered this Sunday, February 7, 2021, in the town of Chamoli in the Indian state of Uttarakhand, in the north of the country. The first reports detail that 19 people have lost their lives and 202 are missing.
The rupture of a glacier in the Himalayas caused one of the strongest avalanches in recent times in India, for which there have been heavy floods in the surroundings. Thousands of people had to be evacuated in an emergency.
The rescue groups are focusing all their efforts on finding the workers of two different hydroelectric plants that were under construction in the area. More than 30 men were located inside a tunnel.
“The operation to rescue those trapped in a tunnel continues. They are trying to clear the tunnel with the help of JCB (construction) machinery ”, the authorities detailed.
Narendra Modi, Prime Minister of India, announced that the government will allocate 200.000 rupees (almost USD 2.300) for the relatives of the deceased and 50.000 rupees (USD 600) for all the seriously injured.
