Ecuador’s Minister of Health resigns amid scandals and leaves the country

The Minister of Health, Juan Carlos Zevallos, presented the irrevocable resignation of his position, amid questions about his management of the vaccination process throughout the country.

Zevallos announced his resignation this Friday, February 26, through a letter addressed to the president, Lenín Moreno, in which he justified:

“Given the current political situation, and in order to enable the continuity of the National Vaccination Plan, I present to you, Mr. President, the irrevocable resignation of the functions of Minister of Public Health.”

The former official thanked the president and assured that “health policies will allow more than 2 million people to be vaccinated until the end of the government.”

On January 27, the minister said that he would not resign from his position after the controversy over the vaccination of his mother in a private center.

«My eternal appreciation to Ecuadorians for having joined this fight that demanded collective actions. Thank you for joining with determination and responsibility in this effort of life “, concludes Zevallos in the letter.

His departure from the Moreno government also comes after criticism for the lack of transparency in the immunization process. In his last press conference offered on the afternoon of this Thursday, February 25, the former minister explained that this information is confidential.

However, during the night, a list with presumed vaccinated VIPs was leaked through social networks, including certain journalists, former presidents, ministers and other officials. However, this news was denied by the General Secretariat of Communication.

In addition, Zevallos faces two requests for impeachment, which are being processed in the National Assembly. The doctor is accused of breach of duties.
