Guayaquil reports an increase in daily cases and deaths from Covid-19

The mayor’s office announced that they will continue taking preventive measures, so that the city does not have to repeat what happened in the months of March and April 2020.

The Covid-19 pandemic has taken a new momentum in the city of Guayaquil, where indicators of sustained increase in positive cases and deaths from Covid-19 are reported. According to the latest reports, the city reported 1.32 cases per 10.000 inhabitants.

The authorities reported that the average number of cases has been increasing since the end of November, where the official estimate determined a contagion level of 0.94 per 10.000 inhabitants.

For its part, a record that is also increasing is the average daily deaths from the virus, previously Guayaquil reported 4.8 deaths per day from the virus, currently, that number reaches 7.

The mayor of the city, Cynthia Viteri, confirmed that security measures will be taken again, to avoid the collapse of the hospitals, as happened at the beginning of the health emergency.

The number of inpatient and ICU beds is lower in hospitals, compared to the highest peak of the pandemic. Therefore, contingency plans are being drawn up to help the most critical areas, if necessary.

For his part, Viteri asked the central government authorities to draw up more controls for the airport, José Joaquín de Olmedo, recalling that case 0 arrived in Ecuador “by air”, the same could happen with the new variant of Covid-19, according to the mayor.
