Boat with 28 immigrants sinks off the Colombian coast

9 people were rescued alive, while two women died. The rescue teams are still working to locate the rest of the crew.

This Monday, January 4, 2021, a boat with 28 immigrants on board, the majority Haitians, was shipwrecked in the waters of the Acandí municipality, in Chocó, northwest Colombia. The first reports dictate that 2 people died and 9 were rescued.

Local authorities reported that in the morning hours of Monday, January 4, 2021, an emergency call was received from the police inspector, who reported the sinking of a small boat, which was illegally transporting immigrants.

The police arrested two subjects, who were identified by the survivors as the boatmen. The men are accused of charging USD 350 per person to illegally transport them to Panama.

The rescue team continues to work in the area, where they have already saved 9 people, 6 men, 2 women and 1 child under 11 years old. While, two women, one pregnant with two babies and another under 6 years of age are, so far, the only fatalities.
