Prime Minister of Italy resigns

The official was harshly criticized for his management in the most complicated moments of the Covid-19 pandemic in the country.

Giuseppe Conte, Prime Minister of Italy, resigned this Tuesday, January 26, 2021, from his public position. The president of the republic, Sergio Mattarella, will initiate the necessary processes to form a new government.

Conte’s resignation is motivated by criticism of his administration during the most difficult moments of the Covid-19 pandemic in Italy.

On the other hand, this resignation also comes when Conte’s political party suffers ruptures in its internal coalition.

President Mattarella will have to begin a series of negotiations with the different political forces this Wednesday, January 27, 2021.

This was Conte’s second government, which was made up of the coalition between the PD (center-left) and the 5-Star Movement (M5E, anti-system) and comes to an end after 509 days in office.
