Ecuador begins vaccination against Covid-19

After the arrival of the first 8.000 doses of the Pfizer vaccine to combat the coronavirus in the country, this Thursday, January 21, the process of immunization of health professionals began at the Guasmo Sur hospitals, in Guayaquil; Pablo Arturo Suárez and Military Hospital, in Quito; Vicente Corral Moscoso, in Cuenca.

The process was transmitted through the Facebook account of the Ministry of Health from the Guasmo Sur hospital, where Minister Juan Carlos Zevallos met.

Julio Velásquez, a doctor who attends the emergency area of ​​the Guasmo Sur Hospital, was the first to receive the Covid-19 vaccine.

In the capital, Dr. Jorge Luis Vélez, head of intensive care and epidemiologist at the Pablo Arturo Suárez Hospital, became the first person to be vaccinated at this health center.

In a short dialogue with the media, Velez said that he felt fine, but that he remains hopeful that the vaccine will reach all health professionals who are on the front line.

Immunization was also carried out to the doctors of the Military Hospital. The emergency leader of this health home, Major Jeanneth Morales, was the first person to be vaccinated. It is estimated that this day 36 doses will be applied in that place.

With this, the pilot phase began, which includes three groups: medical personnel who treat the pandemic, elderly people in geriatric centers and those who care for them, as well as people with disabilities.

The pilot will last three weeks for the first dose. In the first week, the vaccines will be applied at 19 points in Quito, Guayaquil and Cuenca. In the second week there will be 29 centers in Napo, Orellana, Cotopaxi, Pastaza, Tungurahua, Manabí, Galapagos and Pichincha.

While in the third week they will be applied in 48 points, in Carchi, Esmeraldas, Imbabura, Sucumbíos, Chimborazo, part of southern Manabí, Santo Domingo de los Tsáchilas, Bolívar, rural Guayas, Los Ríos, Santa Elena, Morona Santiago, El Oro and Loja.

According to the authorities, the 86 thousand doses announced will arrive until the end of February. Subsequently, starting in March, between two or four million planned vaccines will arrive.
