Passengers tried to travel to Galapagos with fraudulent coronavirus tests

Between August and December 2020, the authorities of the Galapagos Government Council detected that 200 people presented false certificates of PCR tests of Covid-19 at the airports of Guayaquil and Quito.

Ángela Mendoza, district director of that entity in Guayaquil, said that these people were not allowed to travel, but citizens are violating the imposed measures.

In order to detect the false tests, the authorities have had to be in constant contact with representatives of more than 140 laboratories qualified to carry out PCR tests for coronavirus in the country, who confirm if the passenger actually underwent a swab and if his result was negative.

Domestic passengers are the ones who most incur this type of irregularity. Only during the first week of 2021, about 50 fraudulent test certificates have been detected.

Once the Ministry of Public Health has reported 928 infected with coronavirus from February 29, 2020 to Tuesday, January 5, 2021, controls at the Quito and Guayaquil air terminals have been intensified.

The concern arises because Galapagos is considered a safe destination for tourism and this type of action represents a threat.
