European Union stopped recognizing Juan Guaidó as president of Venezuela

The opposition leader will continue to work with the EU to bring “democratic” elections to the South American country.

This Wednesday, January 6, 2021, the European Union (EU) avoided treating Juan Guaidó as president in charge of Venezuela. However, he promised to work with the opposition leader to seek democratic elections in the country.

In an official statement, the EU made it clear that it will continue to work with Guaidó and other legislators from the country’s outgoing assembly, elected in 2015.

“The EU will maintain its commitment to all political and civil society actors who are fighting to return democracy to Venezuela, including in particular Juan Guaidó and other representatives of the outgoing National Assembly, elected in 2015, which was the last free expression of Venezuelans ”, dictates the official statement.

On the other hand, the new legislators of the Venezuelan Assembly took office this Tuesday, January 5, 2021, for which, the EU reiterated its rejection of this action, because, according to its authorities, the country’s elections were fraudulent and undemocratic.

The ruling party led by the current president, Nicolás Maduro, obtained 256 of the 277 seats in the National Assembly, in the last elections, where there was no participation of the so-called “opposition leaders”.
