Chile’s Congress approved a bill that allows citizens to withdraw 10% of their pension funds early. This measure is intended to enable people to cope with the economic crisis caused by the Covid-19 pandemic.
This Thursday, December 3, 2020, after several hours of debate, the Chilean Congress decided to approve with 41 votes in favor and 1 abstention the bill that allows people to withdraw 10% of their pension funds.
This proposal came after the first withdrawal of the pension funds was approved last June, benefiting more than 9 million Chileans. Additionally, all other government aid had ended.
Once this bill was approved, it passed into the hands of the president, Sebastián Piñera, who must now enact it as a law. Experts believe that this approval is a new defeat for the current Chilean government.
