People diagnosed with a serious and irremediable disease may request the help of a professional in their death.
This Thursday, December 17, 2020, the Chilean Chamber of Deputies approved a bill that, complying with certain parameters set forth, a person can request medical assistance to die.
This bill is entitled: “Dignified Death and Palliative Care” and was approved with 79 votes in favor, 54 against and there were also 5 abstentions. The document will have to be modified, due to the appreciations that some deputies gave during the debate.
A person who has been diagnosed with a serious and irremediable disease and who meets all the requirements may request professional assistance, to save her life.
The requirements that are established for assisted death are; that the disease must be diagnosed by two doctors, be over 18 years old, be aware when making the decision, in addition, a specialist must certify that the person is in full use of their mental faculties.
The medical team will have the option of making a “conscientious objection”, while the applicant must delegate two trusted family members to communicate their decision to the doctor.
