Donald Trump delivers 15 presidential pardons

Presidential pardons are very common in the final days of a term in the United States, for which Trump told his team and the press that he will sign more of these documents until January 20, when he hands over power to Joe Biden.

This Tuesday, December 22, the outgoing president of the United States, Donald Trump, delivered 15 presidential pardons and totally or partially commuted the sentences of 5 more people. Among those pardoned are former Republican legislators, military contractors and those convicted of the “Russian plot.”

The people pardoned by Trump were serving different sentences. The military contractors had been jailed after 14 Iraqi civilians were convicted in 2007.

The president also pardoned George Papadopoulos, his former campaign aide, who was in prison for pleading guilty to giving false testimony to FBI agents, in the Russian interference case in the 2016 presidential election.

Presidential pardons are very common in the last days of a president’s term in the United States. The president has also commented to his collaborators that he hopes to sign more, until January 20 when he hands over power to Joe Biden.

There are several requests for the outgoing president to pardon Julian Assange and Edward Snowden, however, their names did not appear on this first list and it is highly unlikely that they will be on a later one.
