The official is accused of leading a corruption ring that received up to USD10 million in bribes.
The Brazilian Supreme Court of Justice decided to give house arrest to the outgoing mayor of Rio de Janeiro, Marcelo Crivella, who had been accused of leading a bribery ring. The former authority was arrested last Tuesday, December 22, 2020.
Crivella had lost the elections in Rio de Janeiro against Eduardo Paes and the transition of power should take place in early 2021. The former mayor is an evangelical pastor who turned to politics and who is also a relative of the billionaire pastor Edir Macedo, an ally of Jair Bolsonaro.
The authorities accuse Crivella of leading an organization that would have charged more than USD 10 million in exchange for official contracts. Therefore, the police and the prosecution also arrested Rafael Alves, who boasted of influence in the city of Rio and had millionaire contracts.
For his part, in house arrest the former mayor of Rio will not be able to leave his department without judicial authorization and will not have telephone contacts either. In addition, there should be no landlines, computers, tablets, laptops, cellular mobile devices or smart televisions at his home.
