Argentine Senate begins debate on legalization of abortion

The projects to be debated seek to legalize the right to interrupt the gestational process, the protection and non-criminalization of pregnant women.

This Thursday begins the debate on the bill on the legalization of abortion in Argentina, after being approved by the Chamber of Deputies on Wednesday afternoon, by commissions, the opinion of the Voluntary Interruption of Pregnancy (IVE) project.

The initiative sent by President Alberto Fernandez to Deputies on November 17, stipulates that “women and other people with gender identities capable of gestation have the right to have an abortion until week 14 of the gestational process.”

At the same time, the “Plan of a thousand days” will be debated, a project that seeks, according to what the document indicates, to turn into law “comprehensive health care and care during pregnancy and early childhood” and whose main objectives are , reduce mortality, malnutrition and malnutrition rates in the country

After the debate in the lower house in Argentina, the IVE project faces some changes with respect to the original in articles 8 (minors) and 10 (conscientious objection). In addition, article 11 is added regarding conscientious objection and the obligations of health facilities.

According to the schedule for the session, the IVE project will be analyzed first. It is estimated that this working session of the deputies will last for 30 hours.
