Migrant caravan sets off to U.S. from Honduras

A group of migrants began the caravan to the United States fleeing the devastation caused by hurricanes Eta and Iota. They leave from the Great Bus Terminal in the northern industrial city of San Pedro Sula.

This is the second caravan of Hondurans of 2020 and in the middle of the coronavirus pandemic. The Guatemalan Migration Institute announced that it maintains monitoring with the Honduran authorities to coordinate the entry of migrants into their country.

It is estimated that the “Caravan of the Victims” leaves with approximately 400 people, among the participants the presence of entire families, young people and even minors can be appreciated.

The human rights defender of that Central American country, Itsmania Platero, said that the 12 caravans that began in 2018 to the United States have been gestated on the north coast of Honduras; place where the maquilas are located, the problems of violence and which is now destroyed by the rains.

The climatic events Eta and Iota left more than 3.5 million people affected by the rains and floods and about 100.000 remain in temporary shelters set up by the Government, churches and private companies.
