The ombudsman said that the Executive violated several human rights during the pandemic.
Freddy Carrión, ombudsman, argues that the National Government owes a debt to the country regarding human rights, because in this regime there is a regressive guarantee of human rights.
This situation, at the discretion of the official, has conditioned the quality of life of people and has violated their dignity, preventing us from enjoying political, civil, economic, social, cultural and environmental rights.
According to the head of the Ombudsman’s Office, the lack of protection on the part of the State institutions has prevented people from developing their life project and enjoying spaces free of violence, spaces of peace.
Carrión said that during the pandemic the country’s situation has been very critical, preceded by the economic crisis, in which the rights to health, education, and employment have been violated.
He gave as an example when thousands of workers who were dismissed from both the public and private sectors, without any type of liquidation, which exposed the fragile situation in which the employees find themselves.
In the case of the right to education, Carrión points out that the situation has been very critical due to the impossibility of accessing technologies, due to the lack of coverage of the internet service, which the National Government had to provide.
He deplored that a student who does not have access to internet connectivity is practically excluded from the educational system, which has been seen when thousands of children and young people have dropped out of the school system because they did not have the equipment or coverage.
“On the health issue, the pandemic exposed the profound social inequity in which Ecuador finds itself, manifested in its maximum expression when people with limited economic resources, the most vulnerable people, have been left out of the health system. And we have seen that in the people who have died, who have not had access to a health center, which has had an impact on the quality of life and even life expectancy” warned the Ombudsman.
