The Oversight Commission will define the impeachment against Minister Romo

The report will recommend or not the censorship and dismissal of the minister for her actions during the October 2019 protests.

The president of the Audit Commission, Elio Peña, convened for this Thursday at 08:00 to analyze and approve the impeachment report against the Minister of Government, María Paula Romo, about her management during the October 2019 protests.

After receiving the evidence for the prosecution and discharge, the Commission will analyze and approve the report on the minister’s political responsibility during the October protests.

Roberto Gómez, Amapola Naranjo and Lourdes Cuesta promoted this inspection process and accuse her of committing several offenses during the national strike of the previous year, among them, that the National Police, the institution under her charge, used expired tear gas bombs against of the protesters; the attack on peace centers and humanitarian reception.

Romo, in her defense, said that it was a “revenge” of her interpellants and rejected the accusations against her. She denied that the police had fired her firearms or used lethal weapons. It alleged that the tear gas bombs were not fired at point-blank range, at the body or faces of the protesters, as the victims testified, who lost their eyes as a result of those projectiles.

The Commission must recommend or not the censure and dismissal of the minister. If it reaches the majority of votes, the document will go to the Legislative Plenary so that the Assembly can decide on Romo’s future. In case of not obtaining the votes in the Commission, the impeachment would be shelved.

At the same time, the interpellating assembly members filed a new request for impeachment. The fourth process against the minister would be for her alleged responsibility in the so-called “distribution of hospitals.” The Legislative Administration Council (CAL) has not yet qualified this request, as well as the five political trials against the former Minister of Economy, Richard Martínez.
