Ecuador registers 914 homicides in 9 months

From January to September, the National Police registered 914 cases of homicides in the country. A high figure when compared to the same period in 2019, when there were 848 cases.

The Police Command ordered its special units to investigate the factors that generated this increase and the places with the most alarming outbreaks.

According to a police report, the majority of violent deaths occurred on the Ecuadorian coast. The provinces of Esmeraldas, Manabí, Los Ríos, El Oro and Guayas are the most affected.

The policemen collected information on each of the crimes and among the most repeated causes is the settlement of accounts between members of criminal gangs.

The last fact that was made public, although it is not yet part of this report because it happened over the weekend, was the death of two men and a boy who were at a children’s party in a Guayaquil neighborhood, when strangers arrived in a taxi and they shot at the guests. It is presumed that it would be for a settling of accounts between criminal gangs.

The Antinarcotics Unit and the National Directorate of Crimes against Life, Violent Deaths, Disappearances, Extortion and Kidnapping (Dinased) have information that in Guayaquil this year a “war” was unleashed between the networks that sell drugs in the streets.

Police reports indicate that the conflicts between the gangs originated in prisons, in which up to this month 37 deaths have been registered.

Another factor that has been observed in cantons near Guayaquil is the struggle for territories. Durán is one of the places that is in the sights of the Police.

In the last three months, residents of the popular neighborhoods of Durán have chosen to paint messages of peace in the streets.

A month ago, two people died and another seven were injured in a shooting on a soccer field. The parties revealed a settling of scores between gangs.

This situation prompted the Police to request the collaboration of the Armed Forces to control the streets.

In the case of Manabí, they are analyzing strengthening surveillance, because in cantons like Pedernales the inhabitants are afraid of what may happen. This, due to the murder of the Property Registrar, Geovanny Zambrano. He lost his life when unknown persons intercepted him outside his home.

Unlike the Coast, in the Sierra, violent deaths occur due to fights, domestic violence, alcohol consumption and assaults.

In Cuenca, a woman died last Tuesday after she was attacked with 113 stab wounds. The person responsible was arrested.

The police authorities have implemented actions to try to stop these events. Video surveillance is one of the tools they use to prevent them, especially in places near financial institutions or shopping centers.
