A collapse in an illegal mine in the San Lorenzo canton, Esmeraldas province, Ecuador caused the death of five people and left several injured, while rescue work continues.

The National Service for Risk and Emergency Management (Sngre) indicated that the collapse occurred in an area with difficult access.

The agency said that all the protocols of the response institutions were activated, such as the Fire Department of several cantons in the province, the National Police, among others.

The National Police initially reported that at least three of those trapped were rescued alive and a similar number (two men and a woman) have died, while two others remain missing among the rubble. Later, the Sngre reported the increase in the death toll to five.

The president of Ecuador, Lenín Moreno, expressed on his Twitter account: “unfortunate news! Due to illegal mining, a landslide occurred in the Los Ajos, ​​San Lorenzo, Esmeraldas sector. I have arranged for risk agencies and emergencies that carry out all the necessary actions to safeguard people’s lives. “
