The president of Chile, Sebastián Piñera, accepted the resignation of General Mario Rozas.

The president of Chile, Sebastián Piñera, announced on the morning of this Thursday that he accepted the resignation of the general director of the Carabineros, Mario Rozas, the day after members of the force attacked some children residing in a home of the National Service for Minors (Sename) from Talcahuano, Biobío region.

During an appearance before the press, the Chilean president expressed: “This morning, the general director of the Carabineros, Mario Rozas, has raised his resignation from office and has given me his reasons and arguments. I share the reasons and General Rozas’s arguments and consequently I have accepted his resignation. “

“I want to express that I have the greatest appreciation, admiration and gratitude for the work that General Rozas has accomplished (…) especially because he had to lead the Carabineros de Chile in an extraordinarily difficult and complex time,” added Piñera.

Rozas’ resignation came after the violent aggression carried out on Wednesday by Carabineros against children from a Sename home in Talcahuano, which left two minors injured. The action of the military force was condemned by social sectors, political parties, and human rights defense organizations.

The aggression of the Carabineros against the state institution adds to the complaints against the violence unleashed by that institution against the demonstrations that shake Chile in opposition to the policies of the Government of Sebastián Piñera.

During his appearance before the media, the Chilean president reported that “the Interior Minister will travel to the region to make contact with the injured persons.” He also expressed his “solidarity and condolence with the injured children, their families and also the police and his family.”

In social networks, the qualifier “accident” used by Piñera to refer to the aggression was immediately condemned.

For its part, the Chamber of Deputies called a special session this Thursday to discuss what happened during the Carabineros action at the center of the National Service for Minors in Talcahuano. The Legislature summoned the Interior Ministers, Rodrigo Delgado and Justice, Hernán Larraín, to report what happened.
