Assembly members accuse government minister of using the police as a shield in her impeachment

The assembly members clarified that the process is against the Minister of Government, not the police institution.

Legislators who are members of the Legislative Oversight Commission accuse the Minister of Government, María Paula Romo, of using the Police as a shield in the political trial against her.

The parliamentarians criticized the official for the dissemination of a video in which she refers to the impeachment trial and appears with dozens of policemen in the background. For the president of the table, Elio Peña, it is evident that she wants to hide behind the police institution, which she described as an incoherence of Romo.

He clarified that the assembly members are not judging the Police politically or questioning it as an institution, but rather the Minister of Government, whom he hopes, as a defendant, will respond next Saturday with her defense tests.

Peña said that with this Romo intends to distract the attention of the Ecuadorian people.

Romo, in the video, points out that the impeachment and the attacks against her, really, “are not for bombs. They are revenge for their sentenced leaders; They are the answer for having prevented a coup in October; they are the consequence of uncovering the fraud of the Police Social Security Institute (Isspol), which involves great political and economic powers ”.

In her opinion, these are the true reasons why Assembly members Roberto Gómez, Lourdes Cuesta (former CREO) and Amapola Naranjo promote the political prosecution against her, for non-fulfillment of functions, during the protests in October 2019.

According to Romo, “some of them are also bothered that a woman has been in front of this episode and this crisis. They don’t even tolerate calling me a minister and they write one judgment after another just to be able to call me “the minister.”

Assemblyman Gómez shared the opinion that Romo, when leaving accompanied by the National Police in said video, intends to use the institution as a shield.

He claimed that those who must be investigated for violent acts, on any of the fronts, must answer to the Attorney General’s Office. On the other hand, the State must respond to international organizations for the violation of human rights. But the one who is being judged politically is the minister, for her actions, within the framework of the law.

Similarly, legislator Mercedes Serrano (PSC) rejected Romo’s statements regarding the motivations for her impeachment, because the grounds for non-compliance with functions in the use of expired tear gas canisters are clear, which were not only launched at the protesters but also the reception centers; as well as not having acted in a timely manner with the Committee for the Protection of Journalists to guarantee their work, she argued.

This parliamentarian also insisted that the trial is not against the members of the National Police, who enjoy the unconditional support of the Legislature, as long as they comply with the protocols and use force proportionally, she warned.
