Universities in Quito that were center of peace and humanitarian aid- rejected the statements of Defense Minister Oswaldo Jarrin, who said, without presenting evidence, that “they were logistic supply centers for protesters and groups that acted in a vandalism way”.
In a statement, the Central University of Ecuador, Salesian Polytechnic University, Pontifical Catholic University of Ecuador, National Polytechnic School and the Simon Bolivar Andean University, ratify their role as Centers of Peace and Humanitarian Aid during the national strike.
They explained that hundreds of volunteers participated in the referred centers and that the action of the academy was aimed at protecting the integrity and dignity conditions of Indigenous families, including women, children and old people.
On October 9, at night, volunteers denounced through videos on social media that the National Police, without any justification, threw tear gas at Salesiana and Catolica Universities and surrounding streets. “We are in a peace zone,” one of the young people said desperately, asking them to stop with the attacks.
The next day, Government Minister Maria Paula Romo apologized and assured that it will not happen again.
