Jurists and academics from Latin America and Europe sign a letter in defense of the UNES binomial

“The judicial and electoral blockade against said political group, led by Rafael Correa, is alarming,” they say.

In an open letter, jurists and academics from Latin America and Europe urge the authorities of the Contentious Electoral Tribunal (TCE) to guarantee the right of participation of all political forces, in the face of a new threat of leaving out the participation of the Andrés Arauz binomial -Carlos Rabascall for the Unión por la Esperanza (UNES) alliance.

In the letter, they recall all the judicial and administrative acts that were initiated to block the participation of the Fuerza Compromiso Social (FCS) movement, led by former President Rafael Correa, in the 2021 elections.

“The judicial and electoral blockade against this political group, led by Rafael Correa, from which in the last three years its original movement, Alianza PAIS, was illegally taken away from it. Now they prevent him from registering a new movement and as well as preventing participation in the presidential elections of February 2021, the letter says.

The signatories, who are more than 60, demand for democratic guarantees that allow the participation of one of the political sectors in Ecuador: Correísmo.

They criticize the fact that the FCS movement was eliminated, as well as the agility of the judicial processes against former President Correa to execute his sentence and disqualify him as a candidate for the vice presidency.

Once the group registered its new presidential binomial, made up of Andrés Arauz and Carlos Rabascall, on October 6, 2020, the Electoral Judge, Fernando Muñoz, admitted for processing an appeal presented to the Contentious Electoral Tribunal (TCE) by Michael Aulestia, a member of the provincial political organization, AHORA, to the CNE’s decision to allow the political participation of the Citizen Revolution.

According to the letter, the admission of the appeal “contravenes Ecuadorian regulations that establish that only political subjects participating in the electoral process have active legitimacy to exercise electoral and jurisdictional resources.”

The decision of the TCE could leave out the binomial of UNES, who heads all the pre-electoral polls.

“Faced with this new attempt to outlaw the presidential binomial of the Citizen Revolution,” jurists and academics ask that the right to choose and be elected, as well as compliance with Ecuadorian laws on electoral material, be respected above all.
