Jorge Quiroga declines his presidential candidacy in Bolivia one week before the elections

His decision is because he has no chance of winning and that he hopes his votes will help defeat Evo Morales’ MAS, he said.

A week after Bolivians go to the polls to elect a new President, Jorge “Tuto” Quiroga, from the Libre 21 alliance, announced his decline in his candidacy for the Presidency.

“I do not have the possibility of reaching the presidency and I have not been interested in the problems. I will not be able to head this government, that’s why I decline our candidacy. I have deep pain and great anguish in my soul. I have differences with other candidates, I hope they act to defeat the MAS, “he said in a statement on his Twitter account.

He regretted that valuable people who accompany him deserve to be in Parliament, “but never if the cost is that the MAS can stay with the presidency in the first round.” Although he complemented that this possibility is negligible, “it is greater than his chance of being president. No matter how small the risk, I must do what is in my power to avoid it, “he said.

In addition, he points out that after more than 23 years of the struggle he has sustained with Evo Morales, “perhaps it calms the waters that, in this election, and for the first time since 1997, he is not there, nor is I”.

The elections in Bolivia will be on October 18 and this Sunday was the last day of the campaign and the last that polls can be published regarding the intention to vote.

Luis Arce, candidate of the Evo Morales movement, leads the polls, but without the advantage to win in the first round. Carlos Mesa follows him in the investigation, who would be his contender in the second round.
