Machuca did not participate in the primary elections of the movement and is replacing Esteban Quirola, who was elected in internal democracy
Although he did not participate in the internal elections of the Libertad es Pueblo movement, the organization registered Juan Carlos Machuca as its candidate to become President of the Republic in the next elections in February 2021.
Gary Moreno Garcés, brother of President Lenín Moreno and national director of the movement, accompanied the candidates Juan Carlos Machuca and Cristóbal Luna (for the Vice-presidency) to the National Electoral Council (CNE) to register.
It is the fourth couple registered until this Friday, September 25. The presidential Gustavo Larrea (Democracia Si), Guillermo Lasso (CREO) and Andrés Arauz (UNES) did the same days ago.
Once the CNE Plenum has reviewed the documentation, requirements and inabilities, it must qualify or reject the binomial presented.
Machuca replaces Esteban Quirola, who was elected in the primary elections to be the candidate for the Presidency by the political movement. After several impasses within the organization, they decided to locate Machuca. Quirola criticized that its registration is illegal and unconstitutional.
Libertad es Pueblo was one of the political organizations that were observed by the Comptroller General of the State (CGE) with alleged inconsistencies in their registration process as a political movement.
The Plenary of the CNE accepted the request of the Comptroller’s Office and decided to eliminate it from the electoral register, together with Podemos, Fuerza Compromiso Social and Justicia Social. But with the ruling of the Contentious Electoral Tribunal (TCE) in favor of the Libertad es Pueblo movement, the actions of the CNE were declared invalid.
