The Ministry of Finance justified the report due to the health emergency that the country is experiencing.
Students and workers from Ecuadorian public universities rejected the budget cut for higher education, which was approved last week by the Constitutional Court.
The students warned that this measure puts approximately 300,000 university students in the country at risk and that some careers such as medicine and art could not be in progress this semester.
The Federation of University Students of Ecuador (FEUE) rejected the Court’s ruling, while denouncing that more than $ 92,000,000 million is being cut from its budget.
The teachers also joined the protests and actions in defense of public education, where they called on the National Government for non-compliance with the payment of their salaries.
During the march, the national police prevented it from going to the Carondelet Palace in the Historic Center of Quito, so it had to be diverted to the Marín sector.
On May 12, the Plenary of the Constitutional Court (CC) resolved to issue the resolution on precautionary measures in which
“It provides that the authorities of the Ministry of Economy and Finance, as well as other authorities of the executive function, to suspend and refrain from making budget modifications that may have a negative impact on the budget of higher education institutions.”
However, these measures were rejected by the Constitutional Court on September 9.
“The cut generated damages to the labor rights of several teachers and affects the quality of the classes the students receive,” says the Permanent Committee for the Defense of Human Rights of Guayaquil about the decision.
